Pahalgam Terror Attack 2025: The biggest attack on the peace of Kashmir

On 22 April 2025, a horrific terror attack took place in Baisaran Valley, Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, killing 28 innocent tourists and injuring more than 20. The attack was the deadliest on civilians in recent years, dealing a severe blow to Kashmir’s peace and tourism.

Attack: Holi of blood in ‘Mini Switzerland’
At 2:50 pm, seven terrorists arrived in Baisaran Valley in military uniform and started firing indiscriminately with M4 carbines and AK-47s. The attackers asked the tourists their names and religion, forced some to recite Kalima, and then opened fire. Local Shia Muslim Syed Adil Hussain Shah tried to stop the attackers, but he was also killed.

Victims: Innocent civilians from across the length and breadth of India

Of the 28 people killed, 25 were Indian nationals from Arunachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Odisha, Gujarat, Haryana, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh. Besides, an Indian Navy officer and an Intelligence Bureau officer were also included. Two foreign nationals—from Nepal and the United Arab Emirates—were also killed in the attack.

Responsible: ‘The Resistance Front’ and Pakistan connection

The responsibility for the attack was claimed by ‘The Resistance Front’ (TRF), a front organisation of Lashkar-e-Taiba. According to Indian intelligence agencies, the attack was planned by Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba senior commander Saifullah Kasuri alias Khalid. The attackers were receiving instructions from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, and were recording the attack with helmet-mounted cameras.

Government response: Rapid action and security review

Prime Minister Narendra Modi returned to Delhi, cutting short his Saudi Arabia visit and chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security. Home Minister Amit Shah visited the site of the attack and the hospital. The government has planned permanent deployment of the army and paramilitary forces, especially to enhance security on the Amarnath Yatra routes.

International reaction: Global condemnation and support

Several countries, including US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Italian Prime Minister Giordano Meloni, and the United Arab Emirates, strongly condemned the attack and expressed solidarity with India. Trump said, “The United States stands firmly with India against terrorism.”

India-Pakistan tensions: Diplomatic relations downgraded

India downgraded its diplomatic ties with Pakistan, recalled defense staff, and suspended the Indus Water Treaty. Pakistan responded by expelling Indian diplomats and closing its airspace to Indian aircraft. Tensions between the two countries have escalated, threatening regional stability.

Way Forward: Challenges to Security and Peace

This attack is a major setback to peace and development in Kashmir. The government must now further strengthen security measures, especially at tourist sites and pilgrimage routes. Dialogue and confidence building with local communities is also essential to eliminate the support base for terrorists.

Conclusion: The need to restore peace

The Pahalgam attack was not only a terrorist act but it was a direct attack on the peace of Kashmir and the unity of India. Now is the time for all of us to unite against terrorism and make Kashmir a ‘heaven on earth’ again.
